A Note by Stanley Norman Smoot, 1980:
    The [Jasper Phares] family migrated to Salinas CA in 1881 and Jasper farmed there and in Chular until 1910 when he retired and the family moved to Santa Barbara Ca, Jasper was instrumental in having his nephew, Johnson Kalar, come to Calif. to assist him in farming. ... He [Jasper] had two brothers William R. and Squire D. (the latter farmed at Chico, Ca.) and two sisters, Alma B. [Almeda Olive Phares] and Sarah [Sarah Elizabeth Ann Phares]. ...
